Country Clubs Extend Community and Belonging

Many people drive by country clubs thinking, “It looks beautiful, but I couldn’t join one.” Yet, many members of North Shore country clubs are just like you —people who want their kids to grow up with a strong sense of belonging.

Linda Leisen, membership director at Royal Melbourne Country Club in Long Grove, says country clubs are no longer considered exclusive havens for the elite but rather centers of community.

“I think these days with people being relocated where they don’t know anybody, it’s hard to make friends,” she says. “Joining a country club is probably one of the best ways to do that.”

Country clubs usually have day camps, golf lessons and swim teams for kids over the summer, which can help kids form friendships and positive connections outside of school. And family members can also create lasting memories together, as brothers bond over a game of tennis or the entire family plays a round of golf.

Moms, too, often enjoy the companionship that country clubs provide. Country clubs usually offer golf lessons for beginners and golf leagues where women can compete against nearby clubs. Even women who are new to a club can easily ask someone to partner with them for golf or tennis.

Unlike city-run swimming pools and parks, country clubs offer families structured social opportunities in an upscale atmosphere. Many country clubs organize annual events that encourage families to mingle, such as Fourth of July festivities and holiday parties.

At Royal Melbourne Country Club, the Wednesday Burger Nights and Friday Happy Hours are popular times to meet other families. “Some of our members have made friends that will last a lifetime,” Leisen says.

Founded in 1992, Royal Melbourne’s course was designed by Greg Norman. Today, Royal Melbourne is a premier destination for golf, tennis, and swimming as well as an ideal venue for social occasions.
