Preschoolers: What We Wish We'd Known Then

1. Spend more time on the carpet.

3. Don't worry too much about potty-training.

5. Bigger isn't better for a family home.

6. Don't over-program your child.

5. It’s OK to let your daughter wear the same ballerina costume to school every day for a year.

6. Don’t sweat the pacifier or the thumb sucking.

7. Don’t assume that your kids will only eat kid food.
“Expose them to different ethnic foods. Take them to restaurants. Introduce new fruits and vegetables because studies show that it takes up to 10 times to entice them to change their minds.

“Involve them in the process. Take them to the market. Let them help cook—even if it’s just stirring the pot.”

8. Read books that you loved from your childhood with them.
“It creates an extra bond. We enjoyed reading ‘Harry Potter,’ but we LOVED reading ‘Little House on the Prairie’ more.”

I think I will slow down and enjoy the day. Thanks for the great advice. Kids are only little for so long.

LOL when I was potty training my sons, people were telling me that their kids were trained at 8 months and didn't wet the bed at 10 months (and they were accepted at Harvard by age 6). I suppose that Huggies were making size XL Pull-ups especially for my kids.....! To top it off, a lot of times the larger sizes were wiped off of the shelves! All three of my boys were all totally trained (day and night) by around age 4. I hope that statement keeps some poor moms out there from getting stressed out by some nitwit about potty training! BTW it can be normal to take a lot longer than that, especially overnight. Huggies is not making overnight Pull-ups in XL's for nothing! Another thing: I think over-scheduling your kids wipes out your kids....and YOU. Give yourselves time to daydream and enjoy life.....and don't be afraid to offer different foods to your kids. It can definitely take a while for them to like different ethnic foods and veggies, but be persistent and keep on offering them along with their favorites and one day they will expand their gastronomic horizons and surprise you! A lot of people give up and go with the usual, but for their health's sake it is imperative to give your kids the gift of good eating habits. I was a meanie; I didn't give my kids candy until they could ask me for it themselves (they had no idea what a lollipop was until about 3 years old and their teeth are great now!). I did give them an occasional scoop of ice cream, a cupcake or frozen yogurt when they were little, though. My middle son was the classic picky eater, but now he will eat tacos with the works, loves broccoli and even indian food! Good old playing in the neighborhood can't be beat when the weather is cooperating; get your kids moving!
